Stepping up at work


As a Sport Development Officer at Derbyshire Sport, you would expect Suzanne Watson to lead an active lifestyle. But despite getting plenty of exercise in her spare time, her job means that she can often spend many hours sat at her desk or in meetings, and so she has recently made a conscious effort to #MoveMore and #SitLess during her working day with the help of a FitBit activity tracker. Here she explains more...

How are you using your FitBit to get more active at work?
I use it to monitor whether I am achieving the recommended 10,000 steps per day but also I am using the 250 steps every hour goal as a trigger to ensure I am not sitting for long periods which has extremely negative health effects.

When you first started using your FitBit were you surprised at the level of activity you were/weren't doing during the working day already?
Yes, very surprised to how low my activity was during the day as I consider myself to be an active person and I like being active and moving. I am very active in the evenings but my day time activity was very low and research has shown that bursts of activity such as going to the gym and exercising whilst carrying massive health benefits don't counteract the negative effects of sitting all day. Therefore both are vital for a healthy person.

What specific things are you doing to increase your steps at work?
I try to complete at least the 250 steps every hour and I get up and climb the stairs just outside my office four or five times to ensure I am moving. I also go out at lunch time and walk around the town.

Has this had any positive/negative impacts on your working day?
I think this has had a positive impact as my brain works better when I am more active and my brain is still working while I am walking up and down the stairs or on my lunchtime walk. I think it allows me a concentration break and stops me getting frustrated about sitting still all day.

Do you find it easy to fit this in to your working day?
It is relatively easy to get the steps every hour in however when I have meetings sometimes its not appropriate to get up and walk around every hour.
