School teams prepare to compete at Derbyshire School Games Event

School teams across Derbyshire are preparing to compete at this year's Derbyshire School Games Event, hosted at Mount St. Mary's College in Spinkhill.

Up to 1,500 young people from primary, secondary and special schools across Derbyshire are set to take part at the multi-sport event which will be held on Tuesday, July 9.

More than 100 teams will participate in a range of sporting activities after qualifying to represent their school sport partnership in inter-school competitions.

County events will be held in Mini Tennis, Quadkids Athletics, Kwik Cricket, Rounders, and Go-Ride Cycling, as well as an Inclusive Multi-Sport Challenge, which will be delivered by the Coaches Academy.

Another 150 young people are expected to volunteer as sports leaders.

Among the schools so far confirmed to compete are Glebe Junior School, Osmaston CofE Primary School, Hayfield Primary School, Codnor Primary School, St Andrews CE / Methodist Primary School, Tupton Hall School, Kilburn Junior School, Eckington School, Tibshelf Community School and Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School.

The School Games Event has been designed to be a fun and inspirational day, providing everyone with the opportunity to experience a multi-sports competition with an opening ceremony and medal presentations. Above all it is a celebration of participation, underpinning the core values of sport in our county.

Its mission is to keep sport and physical activity at the heart of the school curriculum and provide more young people with the opportunity to participate and achieve their personal best.

At a local level, the School Games are delivered by schools, school games organisers, clubs, the eight school sport partnerships across Derbyshire, local partners and this year has been coordinated by Perfect Motion on behalf of Active Derbyshire.
