YHA staff improve their fitness with help of Derbyshire Dales' Active Workplace Scheme

Staff at the YHA's national offices in Matlock have taken big steps to improve their fitness with the help of Derbyshire Dales District Council's Active Workplace Scheme.

The YHA HQ, which employs more than 170 people, signed up to the scheme – currently offered free to businesses based in the Dales – a year ago.

Interactive workshops on healthy eating and physical activity were followed by a body 'MOT' offered to all employees on Boditrax scales, giving them a baseline of how fit they were.

Further workshops followed and now the District Council's community fitness instructor Helen Milton is leading a brisk 25 minute lunchtime walk from the YHA every Wednesday to get staff away from their desks and get into fresh air and conversation with colleagues.

Helen said: "The YHA are always open to new ideas and this is a great example of how employers can look after the health and well-being of their staff."

Lynsey Aspey, from the YHA People Team, said: "The Walking Lunches are proving to be a success and feedback from our employees is really positive. Helen is a constant support and is always there to help and offer advice when we need it. This is a fantastic scheme and I would encourage all workplaces to get involved."

Emily Gardom, from the YHA Call Centre, said: "Keeping fit is very important to me, but this can be hard when working in an office. Taking part in a lunchtime walk has been really beneficial as it encourages me to get out at lunchtime, meet other people in the organisation that I wouldn't normally speak too, and get some much needed fresh air!"

The YHA entered two teams in the District Council's inaugural Corporate Games in September and are already preparing for the next Corporate Games event on May 17.

As members of the Active Workplace Scheme, YHA employees are entitled to 20% off the full Fitness Freedom pass at the District Council's leisure centres in Matlock, Ashbourne, Wirksworth and Bakewell. Since joining the scheme, 35 employees and partners have taken advantage of this benefit and are among the centres' most active users.
